JEEVANA KAEDHAPHATHA
BY
Ranmalee Perera
Growing up in Sri Lanka, I was not only drawn to the creativity and splendor of my surroundings, but was also keenly aware of the breakdown of civil society in the context of ethnic conflict. The most vivid childhood memory was when “Thatha” gave me a piece of coal of the kitchen hearth and asked me to draw on the whitewash of a newly painted kitchen. .” Amma” as always was the solid rock that silently encouraged me to reach for the peak.
Titles do not bind my paintings; they are my “JEEVANA KAEDHAPATHA” (Mirror Images of my Life). Each painting with its vibrant colours, shapes, textures and image captures the personal and communal domains of post colonial Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, I have been fortunate enough to travel to many countries around the world. In my travels and research I have encountered the bounty of our earth in the faces of people that I meet and in their personal and cultural narratives. They are my inspiration, the fuel that ignites and fans the flames of my creative energy.

Last but not least, my husband Carl, my son Nadir and my Daughter Xipil and Sathya are at the core of my creativity. They give me strength to overcome the past, the determination to stay in the present and courage to leap into the future. I dedicate all my work to the children of Sri Lanka, the unwitting victims of a civil unrest.
Oh Mother Earth
My heart is full of gratitude
For the divine gifts, of beauty and love
May we be blessed to give back
By becoming brilliant jewels
Spreading with humility,
Knowledge, service, and Compassion.
